Eye of Eternity
The Eye of Eternity (EoE) is a one boss raid which has an attunement. This attunement quest starts from an item drop from Saphiron in Naxxraxmas. Upon completing the attunement quest line you will receive a key which opens up the raid.
In addition to sometimes being the weekly raid quest, there are a few other reasons to run this raid weekly
- Mount Drop: Reins of the Azure Drake (10 man) and Reins of the Blue Drake (25 man)
- Achievements: There are multiple achievements available in this raid. They can be found at https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/guide/raids/eye-of-eternity-achievements
- Loot: The loot available in EoE 10 man is ilvl 213 and in 25 man is ilvl 226. The Mark of Norgannon is of particular interest to tanks because of the amount of expertise on it.
There is only one boss in EoE
Tank
Tanking Malygos is not too difficult. Like most dragons, he has a frontal cone attack Arcane Breath. Unlike most dragons, Malygos does not have any kind of rear cone attack. Face the dragon away from the raid.
You will need to quickly reposition after each cast of Vortex to ensure none of the raid gets a nasty Arcane Breath on them.
In phase two you will need to quickly pick up the Nexus Lord enemies while also moving into a purple protective bubble.
In phase three, there is no tanking role. You will either focus on damage dealing or healing.
Melee
Once the raid kills a Power Spark, be sure you stand in the pulsing ground effect to obtain the Power Spark damage buff.
Most melee classes will be able to attack during a Vortex, so don't miss out on dealing damage during this spell!
In phase two melee DPS should be the priority players to hop onto the disc platforms and fly into the air. Once you have a disc to fly on, you can zoom around attacking and killing the Scion of Eternitys.
In phase three you will focus on dealing damage to Malygos and moving out of any Static Field. A good damage rotation is to use ability number one Flame Spike twice, then ability number two Engulf in Flames once, and repeat until the boss is dead.
Healers
While Malygos is on the ground, the tanks will be taking most of the damage. When Malygos flies into the air and uses Vortex, all players will be taking around 2000 damage per second. During Vortex you will only be able to use instant cast spells.
Phase two involves some scary damage spikes from the Nexus Lord. They use Haste which should be dispelled or Spellstealed to reduce damage on tanks.
Players focused on healing in phase three should use both Revivify and Life Burst to heal themselves and the damage dealers. Life Burst offers a very powerful boost to your healing that you will want to maintain throughout the encounter.
Overall Strategy
Malygos is a three phase encounter involving fighting the dragon directly, then fighting many minions while avoiding Malygos's breath attacks, and finally culminating in a vehicle fight where the players will control red drakes and use the drake abilities to finish off Malygos.
Phase One
The first phase of the encounter involves fighting Malygos directly. Malygos has a frontal breath attack Arcane Breath so the tank will need to position Malygos facing away from the raid. Unlike most dragon bosses, Malygos does not have any form of tail swipe or rear cone attack. Damage dealers can pump some damage, and healers should focus on the tank.
About 45 seconds after engaging the boss, Malygos will cast Vortex on the entire raid. This lifts each player into the air and deals them each about 2000 arcane damage per second for 10 seconds. Your spells with cast times will be continually interrupted, but you should still be able to use instant cast spells during this time. After the Vortex, everyone will be dropped back down onto the main platform. When this happens the raid will have to quickly reposition to avoid any Arcane Breath. It can be very useful to have Warlock Warlocks use a Demonic Circle: Summon on the location the raid will stand prior to the fight, providing a clear visual indicator for everyone where to go after a Vortex.
Shortly after the first Vortex, you'll start seeing Power Spark coming onto the platform. These little sparkles will buff Malygos if they reach him, but will buff your raid if you kill them before they reach Malygos. A quick Death Grip can help position them on top of your raid so then you can kill them and they will drop a pulsing circle ground effect where they die, buffing all players standing in it with Power Spark. If you stack multiple sparks together, players can benefit from multiple instances of the Power Spark buff at once, massively increasing their damage output.
You will likely see one or two more Vortex on the raid or a few more Power Sparks depending on how high your raid's damage output is. When Malygos reaches 50% health, he will fly up into the air and transition into phase two. During this transition, the ranged damage dealers can continue attacking Malygos and drop him well below 50%. You won't fight Malygos directly in phase two, but having him lower health will make phase three shorter and easier.
Phase Two
During phase two Malygos will fly in the air and occasionally cast various arcane damaging spells at the raid. Multiple Nexus Lord will spawn and come down to attack the raid. There will be some purple bubbles around that offer a protection buff Arcane Overload. Each of these purple bubbles will start out large and gradually shrink, so the raid will need to move from bubble to bubble, occasionally being exposed to receiving full damage. There will be many flying Scion of Eternity around that will also attack raid members with various arcane attacks.
The raid should quickly move into the first bubble and focus down the Nexus Lords. As each Nexus Lord dies, a melee damage dealer should right click the disc platform that they drop. This will allow the melee player to fly into the air and attack the Scion of Eternitys. After each of those die, they will also drop their disc allowing more players to fly. Players who fly into the air on discs are not subject to all the various arcane damage attacks that players on the ground are suffering through. Once all four Nexus Lords are defeated, the remaining ranged damage dealers on the ground should deal damage to any Scion of Eternity that are within range.
As more disc platforms drop from the sky, more players can hop on and start flying. All the grounded players will need to move between the purple bubbles to remain protected from all the various arcane damage that is happening to the raid. Once all of the Nexus Lords and Scion of Eternity are defeated that is the end of phase two.
Phase Three
Malygos will shatter the large platform that the entire fight has taken place on. The players would fall to their death if not for the aid of Alexstrasza who sends her red drakes to aid the players. Each player will mount a red drake and use the drake abilities to finish off Malygos. All drakes have the same abilities, and each player will generally focus on either damaging or healing - there isn't really any tanking in this phase. Usually having 4 or 5 healers and 20 to 21 damage dealers is a good split for the 25 player version, and 2 healers and 8 damage dealers in the 10 player version. Be sure to decide who will focus on what before engaging the boss.
All players will need to avoid Static Field when it is cast. This will create a large spherical AoE that pulses damage on anyone who remains within it. It is good to mark one leader player for everyone to follow and each time a Static Field is cast, rotate around the boss into an area that is safe. All the players can follow the leader and not worry too much about it.
Damage dealer players will be focused on taking down the boss. They will use their number 1 ability Flame Spike combined with their number 2 ability Engulf in Flames to apply an ever increasing damage over time effect on Malygos. A simple and good rotation is to Flame Spike twice then Engulf in Flames and repeat this over and over until the boss is dead. The goal is to continually stack up the Engulf in Flames debuff without ever letting it drop. It is difficult for a player to maintain their Engulf stacks while also doing healing or using defensive abilities, which is why the damage dealers should just focus on the damage.
Healing players will be focused on healing all the damage that Malygos deals to the raid. Healers will use their number 3 ability Revivify to place a powerful heal over time effect on themselves or another player. This also grants a combo point, which enables Life Burst. This Life Burst buff massively increases healing output and it will be something you want to maintain the entire time. Malygos will occasionally focus a few particular players and deal a large amount of direct damage to them. Being able to respond with a quick Life Burst into some Revivify stacks is a great response to help keep the players alive.
The drakes have two additional abilities Flame Shield and Blazing Speed. These are not super useful and if everything goes according to plan, should not be used. The Flame Shield can be used to prevent your own death if healers are struggling to respond to Malygos' focus fire attack, but doing so means you risk dropping your Engulf stacks as a damage dealer which is almost as bad as being dead anyways.
Your raid will continually rotate out of Static Fields as they are cast and stack up Engulf in Flames. The damage on Malygos will accelerate over time and eventually he will fall out of the sky, defeated. Alexstrasza will arrive and award your team with the spoils of victory - a cache full of sweet loot!
